Monthly Musings: Making space for something new

Monthly Musings is our creative corner where The Creative Directory team opens their notebook of inspirations, reflections, and fresh perspectives each month. From emerging trends to personal discoveries, we share the ideas that caught our attention and sparked our imagination. Whether you're seeking creative fuel or curious about what's inspiring fellow creatives, join us as we unpack the month that was.

I've been doing a lot of decluttering this winter season, and it's crazy to see how much stuff I've accumulated over the years. I want to intentionally make room for novelty, so naturally, I did a makeover for my closet space. It's been inspiring to go to IKEA and browse through all of the major creative elements that the designers use. I highly recommend taking yourself or a few friends on an artist date there - it'll move you to sketch, draw, watercolor, and use lots of texture in your artwork.

There's something really powerful about clearing space - both in your apartment and your mental brain space. I've been going through years of accumulated hobbies, knickknacks, gifts, and unused kitchenware. I've thrown away things I've been holding onto for years, ones that no longer feel like this version of me. With all that, I swear I can feel my creativity opening up with the empty space. It's almost as if my ideas finally have room to stretch their legs.

But the real game-changer? Switching up where I work. Instead of sticking to my tried-and-true spots, I've been exploring new spots like The Drawing Room in midtown. Connie, Roxy (my fur-child), and I recently worked from there and soaked in all of the warm lighting (little lights only!), and chatted about future plans for The Creative Directory over a piping hot cup of tea.

It's amazing what happens when you make space for both the new and the old. My half-written journal for The Artist's Way still sits on my desk, but now it's next to a quaint little ceramic vase I found at that antique shop on Vanderbilt. My usual morning writing routine feels different (better!) by sitting in a new art cafe.

I urge everyone to try out some new places and make room in their routine for the unplanned. Sometimes, the best way to invite creativity in is to clear space for it to land. Trust me, your creativity will thank you.
